Welcome to Stony Point Nature Reserve,Â
one of the coolest (and most important) penguin hangouts on the planet.
This spot, located in the coastal town of Betty’s Bay, South Africa, is home to the third-largest breeding colony of African Penguins in the world. That means you’re standing (virtually) in a place where conservation is actually working. In 2021 alone, around 1,600 breeding pairs of African Penguins called Stony Point home, and thanks to protection efforts, that number has been growing.
As you explore the colony, you’ll see penguins doing what penguins do best: swimming through the bay, waddling across the beach, and nesting along the shore. But they’re not the only residents here. Look closely at the outer rocks, and you’ll spot three different kinds of cormorants: the Crowned, Cape, and Bank cormorants, raising their chicks nearby. Overhead, Hartlaub’s Gulls and Kelp Gulls swoop in and out of the colony, and if you’re lucky, you might even see a rock hyrax, also known as a dassie, sunbathing on the rocks like it owns the place.
Stony Point isn’t just a wildlife hotspot; it’s a place with a past. The reserve sits on the site of an old whaling station, which makes it a powerful reminder of how humans can change their relationship with the ocean, from exploitation to protection. Today, raised boardwalks let people observe penguins up close without disturbing them, proving that tourism and conservation can work together.
