Paid Internship Opportunity: Research Assistants (3) for Conservation Leadership Project

 

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

This research project will explore the role zoos and aquariums take in cultivating the next generation of conservation leaders. Our project, "From Summer Camps to Conservation Courses: What role do Zoos and Aquariums play in Growing Conservation Leaders?" seeks to evaluate and understand the educational programs designed to foster conservation leadership globally.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist in the development of surveys tailored for zoo and aquarium education program coordinators.
  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of institutional websites to gather data on conservation leadership programs, including curriculum details, duration, cost, and targeted ages of the students.
  • Participate in organizing and conducting semi-structured interviews with program participants and facilitators.
  • Engage in the selection and analysis of case studies exemplifying best practices in conservation leadership training.
  • Support the data collection process through sampling, survey distribution, and interview coordination.
  • Contribute to both quantitative and qualitative data analysis processes.
  • Help in the preparation of reports and presentations to disseminate research findings.

 

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:

  • Catalog and detail the various conservation leadership programs zoos and aquariums offer worldwide.
  • Assess the impact of these programs on developing conservation leadership skills among participants.
  • Draw comparisons between the educational strategies of US institutions and those abroad.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 17 years of age or older. 
  • Must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program related to Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Education, or a related field.
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in data collection and analysis. 
  • Must be willing to learn more about qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have a keen interest in conservation education and leadership development.
  • Must be able to commit to finishing their part of the research project and not leave their teammates responsible for completing the research report.
  • Must be proficient in Apple Numbers or Microsoft Excel, the second choice for documenting the research findings. The ability to design and lay out the final report in Canva is a bonus.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:

  • The internship project will run from May 1, 2024 - August 18, 2024
  • This position can be carried out remotely, with virtual meetings as needed.

 

COMPENSATION:

  • This internship is a paid position. 
  • A flat fee is paid based on the work time available and the quality of the project delivery.
